What is normal?

How do you tell weather someone is normal or abnormal? I truly believe that some people can tell right a way if they are abnormal but some people are quiet and hard to tell. In my psychology class my teacher showed us twenty five pictures of different people. Some people were abnormal and some were normal. She asked us to identify the abnormal and normal people. I thought that I was going to be pretty good at it but when she gave us the answers I was wrong on most of them. What I am trying to say is that looks can be deceiving and you shouldn't be so quick to judge. If you met someone and you make a decision about them you could be completely wrong about them and miss out on a great person. I think that my generation is really quick to judge people. What I learned is that I have been quick to judge people and I am going to start to make an effort to get to know people before I judge.

That is a good point, especially now when the culture seems to be moving away from personal interaction. My only question is who or what is considered "normal"? Does "normal" mean a person fits in at school, or someone who is physically active? Does it mean that they have no physical differences on the outside of their body? Does it mean that they think the same way as everyone else? Normal is a very difficult word because it is hard to prove, especially when talking about humans. Everyone is different from each other. Thus is there really a norm? What do you or the teacher you made reference to define as "normal"?

What's normal is really all about perception. I learned that in psychology class last year, a class that I believe you're in now. The teacher always steered us away from using the term 'normal', because really, who are we to say what is normal? It's all about perceptions of the individual, at least in my opinion. I don't really seem to understand the activity you're talking about: you have a second teacher that we didn't have last year. It seems like you're saying there were abnormal people in the group of pictures, and I don't understand how someone could prove that someone was "abnormal" when, like timmmmmmmy said, normal is an incredibly difficult word to use.

I would have to say both of you guys bring up really good points. I think you really can't say what normal is. I say that because normal means something different to everyone. Back to what Timmy and Bene said you really shouldn't use the word normal because even if someone is mental ill in their mind they could be so called normal. Also to the eye they may look normal. You really can't say or tell .
